Fickleodeon's events for 2009

At Burning Man
August 31st - September 7th

Hungover Physical Therapy: Monday and Wednesday, August 31st and September 2nd, 10a -1p

Suffering from whiplash from raving all night? Back pain from silhouette sex? Neck pain from sleeping on a crappy thermarest? Foot pain from walking all the way home after just missing that art car your friends got on? Come to camp Fickleodeon's own physical therapy clinic hosted by Dr. Rainbow. Maybe you'll get some bodywork; maybe he'll show you a few stretches; maybe you'll get a kombucha cocktail and some peeled grapes; maybe he'll make you work out your core until your abs are bleeding. No appointments necessary--he'll just be doing his best to help you on a first come, first serve basis.

Make Your Own Mini-Manifesto: Monday, August 31st, All Day

One-Minute Manifesto: Express & Publish Your Own Doctrine! Does the world know of your genius? What do you want to get off your chest? Do you believe in three-titted witches? What would life be like if you rewrote all the rules? Can you explain exactly how you got yourself into this mess? Declare anything you’d like—how to change the world or how to change your underwear! We’ll be collecting hundreds of manifestos, and with your permission, your manifesto will be published in a print edition zine to be distributed free of charge to all who request it. Fickleodeon is our word for random, quick-hit, ever-changing and sometimes spontaneous theater. On the playa in 2009, we'll be out and about, taking our brand of interactive silliness to the people of Black Rock City. In camp, you'll find plentiful shade, cool drinks and some of the best friends you've yet to meet. Visit often!

Fickleodeon Cleanup Plan

Fickleodeon strives to adhere to the philosophy of Leave No Trace (LNT). Our LNT coordinators will be Lovemonkey and Bill. The Fickleodeon Cleanup Plan consists of five (5) parts:

Informing our camp members of our Cleanup Plan
Preparation for cleanup
Daily camp cleanup
Random cleanup on the Playa
Final camp cleanup

Informing our camp members of our Cleanup Plan

Our LNT Coordinator will ensure that everyone in our camp is aware of our Cleanup Plan. In addition, our Cleanup Plan will be posted on our group’s planning website so all members have a reference. Any questions about our Cleanup Plan can be addressed to Lovemonkey. In addition, it will also be suggested that Fickleodeon members use additional information from these helpful web sites to educate themselves about the LNT philosophy and practice:

Preparation for cleanup

In order to LNT, Fickleodeon will prepare in three (3) ways:

Reduce the amount of material brought to the Playa.
Prepare ourselves with the proper tools for cleanup.
Leave the MOOP Makers at home.

Reduce Material

Excess packaging: Many of the supplies we obtain for Burning Man have excess packaging. Planning to remove that packaging before packing for the playa greatly reduces the amount of trash that has to be hauled out. Some suggestions:

Remove the cardboard wrappers and plastic from your batteries and store them all in a plastic zip bag.
Consolidate as many food items as you can. Plastic outer wrappers easily become MOOP, so remove it first. If you can store items that come packaged in cardboard in a zip bag, great! Better yet, buy in bulk and then you won’t have to dispose of the cardboard at home either. Buy recyclable beverage cans, rather than bottles. Glass is both a physical hazard and a potential MOOP hazard on the playa.
Buy items in recyclable plastic (that can be easily crushed to save space).
Pre-make and freeze some food, if you plan on “real” meals on the Playa. If they are frozen solid, they will last 2-3 days in a well stocked ice chest, and longer if you have one chest for frozen items stored on dry ice.

Tools for cleanup

Fickleodeon will be prepared for general cleanup with the following materials. Each member will contribute:

Industrial strength garbage bags.
A number of small plastic grocery bags or similar items to take with us when we go out so we have something to capture the stray MOOP we meet.
A tin container for butts, if a smoker.
Extra room in their vehicle to haul out trash.

Avoid MOOP Makers

There are a lot of things that might be nice on the Playa, but should be avoided. Some of these items are:

Feather boas or anything made of many, small, unsecured feathers.
Shelled nuts, such as pistachios. While tasty, they inevitably end up on the playa.
Any sheet plastic or other flexible material spray painted. The paint will flake off.
Any faux fur material that hasn’t been washed or has begun shedding.
Silly string, confetti or anything like it.
Astroturf.

Daily camp cleanup

Fickleodeon will police its own camp space on a daily basis. Our general philosophy is “Don’t let it hit the ground,” however, regular sweeps of our space will be made in order to pick up stray MOOP, especially in public areas. In addition, our camp will be prepared with:

An evaporation system for waste water.
An apparatus for our shower that allows users to catch their waste water in a bucket and haul it away to the evaporation tank or transfer it to empty screw-cap jugs and pack it out.
Segregated trash for dry trash, wet trash, recyclables that can be taken to Recycle Camp, and recyclables to be hauled out.
A flat blade shovel to cleanup any wet spills, such as food.

Random cleanup on the Playa

Each member of Fickleodeon will be prepared to carry a small plastic bag with them as they go out and visit other sites on the playa so that stray MOOP can be captured as they come upon it.

Each member of Fickleodeon will spend a minimum of two hours during the event or before departure doing a random walk or a trash fence walk picking up stray MOOP.

Final camp cleanup

During the breakdown of our camp, we will pay special attention to zip ties, metal fasteners and the like so that they do not hit the ground. These items can be easily covered by playa dust and lost to the eye if dropped.

After Fickleodeon is broken down, a group will walk the site, shoulder to shoulder, to make sure that any possible additional material left has been picked up.

All trash and recyclables will be taken with us in our vehicles. This will be deposited only at designated dumps or taken back to our respective homes for disposal.

Extra drinking water and liquor will be left at the DPW drop site, if they are accepting donations, upon leaving the Playa.
